Italy's Eni, through AGIBA Petroleum Company—its joint venture with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC)—announced the launch of startup activities for the Meleiha Phase II project in Egypt's Western Desert.
The project will contribute to increasing the processing capacity for gas produced from the region's fields
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources stated in a press release today that the project represents a major milestone in developing a new gas processing hub within the combined Meleiha Concession area. It will also significantly contribute to increasing the processing capacity for gas produced from the region's fields, thereby supporting domestic gas production growth and maximizing the utilization of Egypt's energy resources.
The new facility will process up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day
The new facility is designed to process up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
The second phase of the Meleiha project includes an integrated infrastructure system comprising development wells, production gathering networks, trunklines, and a new dedicated gas export pipeline.
These facilities will ensure the connection of new production to Egypt's existing gas infrastructure, enabling the accelerated realization of economic returns from resources and enhancing operational efficiency.
The launch of the project underscores Eni's role as a strategic partner to Egypt and reaffirms the company's longstanding commitment to contributing to the enhancement of the country's energy security through the development and maximization of the diverse resource base in the Western Desert, which is considered one of the most promising areas in Egypt's energy sector.
The project will also contribute to increasing the availability of natural gas for the domestic market and has been developed in accordance with the highest standards of operational excellence, safety, and environmental sustainability.
242 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day is Eni's total hydrocarbon production in Egypt during 2025
The Italian company has been operating in Egypt since 1954 and is currently the country's largest energy producer, with its hydrocarbon production reaching approximately 242 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day based on its equity share during 2025.
Through its subsidiaries and joint ventures, Eni is active across all areas of the energy sector, including exploration, development, and production activities in the Western Desert, the Gulf of Suez, the Nile Delta, and the Eastern Mediterranean.
