Minister of Petroleum Announces the Formation of a Working Group to Develop Curricula According to Industry Needs

Hapi_ Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, witnessed a panel discussion with seven petroleum engineering and geology students from Cairo, Alexandria, Al-Azhar, and Suez universities, the American University in Cairo, the British University, and Future University, in cooperation with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Egypt Section, titled "From Today's Students to Tomorrow's Energy Leaders". The session was moderated by Dr. Ahmed Hamdi El-Banbi, Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the American University in Cairo.

The session addressed the future of the oil and gas industry in light of rapid technological developments, the role of artificial intelligence and digital transformation in enhancing operational efficiency, accelerating project execution, and reducing costs, alongside discussing ways to enhance the qualification of young engineers and geologists and strengthening the link between academic education and the actual needs of the labor market.

Eng. Karim Badawi emphasized that young people are not merely cadres preparing to join the petroleum and energy industry, but partners in its development and in shaping its future. He noted that their fresh ideas and ability to handle modern technology represent an important opportunity to reconsider traditional working methods, raise performance efficiency, and innovate more advanced and effective solutions.

The Minister explained that the rapid development in artificial intelligence applications and digital technologies necessitates openness to new ideas rather than relying solely on methods the industry has applied for many years. He affirmed that future excellence will belong to those capable of leveraging technology and knowledge to deliver better, faster, and more cost-effective results.

He stressed the importance of students taking the initiative to learn about modern digital tools and experiment with their practical applications, thereby enhancing their ability to contribute to the development of the oil and gas industry. He highlighted that intergenerational knowledge sharing is an essential element in building a more efficient sector capable of keeping pace with global changes.

In a practical step to align academic studies with industry requirements, the Minister announced an initiative to form a working group comprising representatives from students, universities, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and sector companies. This group will study developing curricula and educational and training programs in line with the needs of the petroleum and energy industry, not only at present but also over the next five to eight years.

He explained that this step aims to identify the technical and technological skills the industry will require in the future, and to leverage the expertise of specialists in companies and universities to develop educational content, contributing to preparing graduates with the necessary skills to efficiently transition from academic study to professional life.

In this context, the Minister underlined the importance of enhancing cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and relevant universities, as well as developing sustainable communication mechanisms between students and petroleum sector companies throughout the academic year. This approach expands training opportunities beyond summer programs to include professional immersion, direct exposure to the nature of operations at job sites, and participation in practical applications and technical studies that can be utilized in academic research and projects.

He also emphasized the importance of drawing upon the expertise of sector leaders, specialists, and company employees to transfer knowledge to new generations and develop their technical, personal, and professional skills, thereby enhancing their readiness for workplace requirements and helping them build successful career paths.

The Minister addressed a message to the students, calling on them to trust their abilities and not to worry about transitioning to professional life. He affirmed that the petroleum sector possesses accumulated expertise and a culture rooted in collaboration and knowledge exchange, enabling new cadres to benefit from this experience while simultaneously introducing new ideas and visions that contribute to improving performance and opening broader horizons for innovation.

The Minister concluded by reiterating that continuous development, learning, and knowledge exchange are fundamental pillars of success in the rapidly evolving petroleum and energy industry. He pointed out that investing in preparing and qualifying young talent to handle modern technologies represents an investment in the sector's capability to develop, compete, and meet future demands.
